The Fourth Spiritual Hillock of Shravanabelagola

Shantigiri has emerged as a significant fourth spiritual hillock in the historic town of Shravanabelagola, Karnataka, expanding the sacred landscape of this ancient Jain pilgrimage center. Traditionally recognized for its twin majestic hills, Vindhyagiri and Chandragiri, the town has been a thriving epicenter of Jain faith, art, and philosophy for over two millennia. Grand 10.5-Foot Statue & Centenary Commemoration

The hillock gained immense national prominence following the installation and unveiling of a grand 10.5-foot stone statue dedicated to Muni Shree Shantisagar Maharaj. The statue was unveiled by national leaders in late 2025 to officially commemorate the 100th anniversary of the revered saint's arrival in Shravanabelagola. Positioned beautifully on what was once a vacant hill adjacent to Vindhyagiri, this monument serves as a modern architectural marvel that pays homage to the revival of ascetic traditions in India.

Acharya Shantisagar Maharaj – The Emperor of Good Character

Acharya Shantisagar Maharaj, whom this hill honours, was an iconic 20th-century Digambara Jain monk often revered as "Charitra Chakravarti" (the Emperor of Good Character). Born in 1872 in Belagavi, he played a historic role in reviving the ancient, wandering monastic lineage after centuries of decline. He famously traveled across undivided India, undertook thousands of strict religious fasts, and led successful peaceful protests to secure legal rights from the British Raj for Digambara monks to travel freely according to their vows. His deep connection to Shravanabelagola began with his early visits and his presence at the legendary 1925 Mahamastakabhisheka ceremony.
