The Shantinatha Basadi in Jinanathapura, a village that flourished during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, is an outstanding example of Hoysala sculpture. It is the only Jina temple whose outer enclosure combines intricate carving with exceptional sculptural beauty. An inscription on the pedestal of the Shantinatha image in the sanctum records that Vasudhaikabandhava Rechimayya built it. With the support of the Hoysala Empire, he constructed the Basadi in the Hoysala style.

The Basadi has a star-shaped ground plan, and the upper structure follows the same outline. The base includes a clearly carved lotus-leaf course and is ornamented with horizontal bands of horses, elephants, creepers, and other motifs. The section between the wall and tower is called the prastara. The most important feature is the relief sculpture on the outer wall. A circuit along the raised platform reveals breathtaking carving. Below each projection are figures of Tirthankaras, Yakshas, and Yakshis, with creepers above. The madanika figures on the outer wall are mostly shown dancing and display finely detailed ornaments and traditional beauty. Images identified by researchers, beginning on the south side, include Padmavati, Dharanendra, Saraswati, Chakreshwari, Padmavati, Rati and Manmatha, Parshvanatha with Ambika, Parshvanatha, Vajrashrinkhala, Suparshvanatha, Padmavati, Sarvahna, Saraswati, Parshvanatha, Neminatha, Chakreshwari, Ambika, Manmatha, and Anantamati.
