Chandraprabha Basadi

Because this Basadi displays many Ganga-period features, it may be dated to the eighth century. An inscription on the pedestal of the Chandraprabha image in the sanctum calls it the Basadi of the Vakragachchha. The interior contains a sanctum, vestibule, navaranga hall, and entrance hall. Built of hard granite, it underwent many later changes. Its ancient features survive chiefly in the navaranga pillars, whose simple brackets are characteristic of the Ganga period. At the centre of the navaranga ceiling is a circular eight-petalled lotus. The most important sculptures here are Ambika Yakshi and Sarvahna Yaksha in the navaranga, both seated on lions and richly ornamented. The Yakshi sits with her right leg lowered and left leg folded; the pleats of her sari are artistically carved. She holds a cluster of blue lotuses in her right hand and a fruit in her left, with a gesture expressing splendour. The sculpture of the Yaksha seated in padmasana is likewise richly ornamented.
