Jaruguppe Basadi

The Jaraguppe Basadi is a small upper-storey Jain shrine located at the base of Vindhyagiri Hill in Shravanabelagola, Karnataka. Situated on the left side right where the stone climbing steps begin, it sits directly on top of the ground-floor Brahmadeva Temple. Established in 1679 AD by Rangaiya of Hirisave, this upper storey houses a three-foot-tall, red-colored stone idol of Lord Parshwanath in a standing meditative posture. This central idol is beautifully framed by intricate relief carvings of all twenty-four Tirthankaras. While the ground floor temple is dedicated to Brahmadeva and features a flat stone painted with red ochre, this later 17th-century addition serves as a separate sanctuary. Because it sits right at the starting point of the main ascent to the giant Gommateshwara statue, many visitors frequently overlook it as they begin their climb.
